Local sources in Badakhshan say that a former National Directorate of Security (NDS) employee was shot two days ago on the Qara Kamar-Fayzabad road and died in hospital yesterday.

Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Wednesday, July 1, that the former NDS employee was named Abdul Jamil Joya and had served as the Deputy Director of Urban Security at the former Badakhshan Directorate of the National Directorate of Security (NDS).

According to the information, he was shot while traveling with a convoy of Hajj pilgrims.

It has been reported that Abdul Jamil Joya was wounded in the shooting and transferred to the Kunduz Regional Hospital for treatment, but he died yesterday as a result of his injuries.

According to the sources, he had previously served in the Greater Badakhshan Urban Security Directorate and in several departments within the Badakhshan Directorate of the NDS. He was an influential local figure and was fluent in English, Urdu, and Arabic.

Some sources have said that he is believed to have been assassinated by the Taliban.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, dozens of cases involving the arrest, torture, and killing of members of the former government’s security and defense institutions have been reported.
