The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced that, with financial support from the Republic of Korea, it has constructed 205 earthquake-resistant buildings in Sutan village of Nangarhar province, including residential homes and two health centers.
The programme said in a report on Wednesday, September 23, that 203 of these buildings provide shelter for vulnerable families, including returnee families who had been displaced again following the earthquake.
The buildings were constructed under an “owner-driven construction” approach.
The United Nations Development Programme provided technical advice, engineering expertise and construction support, while families voluntarily covered between 10 and 50 percent of the costs.
According to the report, the projects also provided employment opportunities for 719 local workers, including 188 women.
The organization added that by rehabilitating a damaged water source, irrigation has once again been made possible for around 500 acres of agricultural land.
