Nigerian authorities have announced that approximately 100 United States military personnel have entered the country to assist in countering Islamist insurgents.
The spokesperson for Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters stated on Monday, February 16, that these forces will undertake the task of training and advising local troops and will not participate in combat operations.
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, had previously accused Nigeria of failing to protect Christians from attacks by Islamist militias in the northwest of the country.
However, the Nigerian government has rejected this accusation and emphasized that its security forces target armed groups that attack both Muslim and Christian communities.
Nigeria, with a population of about 240 million people, faces serious security challenges, particularly in its northern regions.
