The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that 88 percent of the required funding to respond to humanitarian needs in Afghanistan for the year 2025 remains unmet. According to the report, only 12 percent of the necessary funding has been secured so far. In a report released on Tuesday, May 20, OCHA stated that in the first two months of 2025, food assistance was provided to seven million people.
OCHA noted that the full impact of the U.S. funding cuts, announced in January, has not yet been fully reflected in the financial reports. These cuts have led to the suspension of operations by several organizations in Afghanistan. Based on OCHA’s report, at least 400 health centers have ceased operations as a result of the budget shortfall.
OCHA had previously estimated that approximately 22 million people in Afghanistan would require humanitarian assistance in 2025.
