South Korean media report that Chinese President Xi Jinping may visit North Korea as early as next week.
The Yonhap News Agency reported on Wednesday, May 20, citing a senior government official, that the visit could take place in late May or early June.
According to the report, a group of Chinese security and protocol officials has recently traveled to Pyongyang.
The report adds that Xi is expected to try to play a mediating role in rising tensions between the United States and North Korea.
It also states that Xi hosted U.S. President Donald Trump last week, and may now travel to Pyongyang for talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
China is one of North Korea’s closest political and economic allies, and both countries have recently worked to strengthen ties after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Donald Trump has previously said he is open to meeting Kim Jong Un again and maintains a positive relationship with him.
