Seven Pakistani soldiers were killed and 13 others wounded on Friday in a suicide attack targeting a military camp in North Waziristan, near the border with Afghanistan.
According to a Reuters report published Friday night, October 17, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the wall of the military compound, while two other assailants attempting to enter the camp were shot dead by Pakistani forces.
The office of Pakistan’s Prime Minister also confirmed that six attackers were killed during the assault.
The attack followed a week of heightened tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban, during which dozens were killed and hundreds more injured.
According to the report, before the temporary agreement on a 48-hour ceasefire, Pakistan had carried out airstrikes in border regions.
Reuters, citing Pakistani sources and a Taliban official, reported that the ceasefire has been extended until the conclusion of planned negotiations in Doha later this week.
The clashes began after Islamabad demanded that the Taliban rein in militant groups that have intensified their attacks inside Pakistan.
The Pakistani military said it had launched “retaliatory” operations following a series of militant attacks but remained open to dialogue to resolve the crisis.
Meanwhile, the Taliban denied the allegations, accusing Pakistan of provoking border tensions and supporting militants affiliated with the Islamic State group.
