Afghanistan Journalists Center (AJC) has announced that Shakib Ahmad Nazari, a local correspondent for Japan’s NTV television channel in Afghanistan, has been released after spending 405 days in Bagram prison.
The center reported on Tuesday, September 1, that Nazari was released today after being transferred from Bagram prison to a detention facility run by the Taliban intelligence agency in Kabul, and has reunited with his family.
According to the report, Nazari was arrested on July 24, 2025, and on December 3 of the same year, the Taliban sentenced him to three years in prison on charges of propaganda against the group.
The Afghanistan Journalists Center said that Nazari was denied access to a defense lawyer during his detention and was sentenced to prison on charges including collecting and sharing daily news from Afghanistan with Japan’s NTV television channel and cooperating with the Hasht-e Subh Daily.
The Taliban had arrested Nazari along with two other media workers in Kabul. One of them was released about a month ago after spending a year in prison, but according to the center, another media worker remains in prison.
The center has called on the Taliban to release the other imprisoned journalists and media workers and to ensure that they can carry out their activities without threats, pressure, or fear of arrest.
