Sources in Kandahar say former government military personnel who are now living in Afghanistan are under close surveillance by the Taliban.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Tuesday, September 15, that the Taliban have registered the details of former military personnel confined to their homes in Kandahar and Uruzgan provinces, and the group’s intelligence agency keeps them under continuous surveillance.
According to the sources, the Taliban have warned these individuals that they must inform them if they go to a gathering or another location.
A source in Kandahar says the Taliban’s intelligence agency investigates these individuals every 15 days to ensure that they have no contact with groups opposed to the Taliban.
Meanwhile, another source in Uruzgan says that if a former government military member travels from his home to another location even for two days, the Taliban put pressure on his family members and claim that the individual has joined groups opposed to the Taliban.
According to the source, the family members of these individuals also face threats.
The source adds that former military personnel remain under Taliban surveillance even when they make temporary trips to another province, and upon their return, they are questioned about the details of their trips.
This comes as numerous cases of harassment, detention, and mistreatment of former government military personnel in Afghanistan have been reported since the Taliban seized power.
