Sources say officials from the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Khost province have burned hundreds of musical instruments seized from wedding ceremonies.
Mustaghfar Gurbaz, the Taliban governor’s spokesperson in Khost, confirmed on Wednesday, November 4, that the ministry’s inspectors had burned 650 musical instruments.
The instruments had been confiscated during various operations in Khost city and the province’s districts.
Gurbaz said a large quantity of fireworks and firecrackers had also been burned alongside the musical instruments.
Since returning to power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have imposed widespread restrictions on cultural and artistic activities, particularly music.
The group has restricted the broadcasting of music by media outlets and its use at public events. It has also repeatedly confiscated and destroyed musical instruments in various provinces.
