Local sources in Bamiyan have reported that the Taliban destroyed a SAARC cultural symbol in the province.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Wednesday, September 16, that the Taliban destroyed the symbol, which had been designed with an image of Buddha.
The symbol was located in a park near the Bamiyan provincial governor’s office.
In 2015, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) recognized Bamiyan as the organization’s cultural capital, and the symbol was built in the province as a commemorative monument.
The Taliban have also destroyed several cultural and historical monuments in different parts of Afghanistan over the past five years.
This comes as the Taliban, during their first period in power in 2001, also destroyed the giant Buddha statues in Bamiyan.
