US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the war with Iran affected the Republican Party’s performance in the country’s midterm elections.
Reuters reported early Thursday, November 5, that although Trump admitted the war had influenced the election results, he defended his decision to pursue the conflict.
According to the report, Trump said: “We had to take that Iran detour, and we are continuing to do so.”
The war with Iran has driven up petrol prices in the United States, a factor widely seen as one of the main reasons behind the Democrats’ significant gains in the elections.
However, Trump said the war had been worthwhile to prevent Tehran from acquiring a “nuclear weapon.”
