US President Donald Trump has said the United States is close to reaching a trade agreement with Canada. However, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said work remains to be done and that Washington has dropped some of its demands.
Reuters reported early Wednesday, November 4, that Trump made the remarks in an interview with a media outlet supportive of him.
According to the report, Trump said, “Canada is doing very well. We will reach an agreement with Canada soon. We will make a great deal.”
Canada and the United States have imposed tariffs worth billions of dollars on each other’s goods in recent months.
Three days ago, Trump and Carney said they had discussed a possible trade agreement.
Carney said the United States had dropped some of its earlier demands, including a condition that would have given Washington the final say over any trade agreements Canada planned to sign with other countries.
Meanwhile, Trump’s imposition of steep tariffs on goods imported into the United States has strained relations between Washington and countries that export to the US.
