Tammy Bruce, Deputy U.S. Representative to the United Nations, says that the Taliban use prisoners as tools of pressure.
Bruce said on Thursday, February 12, at the UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan that the Taliban uses American hostages as leverage in negotiations with Washington.
He voted in favor of extending the mandate of the Taliban Sanctions Monitoring Committee.
The UN Security Council extended the mandate of the Taliban Sanctions Monitoring Committee for another year.
Tammy Bruce emphasized in this meeting that the Taliban must stop hostage-taking.
Meanwhile, Asim Iftikhar, Pakistan’s representative at this meeting, said that the Taliban must choose between isolation and engagement.
He emphasized that Afghanistan’s territory must not be used by terrorist groups.
On the other hand, Anna Evstigneeva, Russia’s representative, said that the United Nations should continue its engagement with the Taliban.
Afghanistan sanctions (1988) include asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes against individuals, groups, institutions, and entities associated with the Taliban.
