Forty-one U.S. lawmakers have called on U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to pressure Israel to release detained Palestinian medical workers.
Al Jazeera reported early Saturday, September 26, that the lawmakers expressed concern in a letter to Rubio over the continued detention of Palestinian healthcare workers.
According to the report, they said Palestinian medical workers had been arbitrarily detained without formal charges or due process.
They added that the detention of these workers further harms Palestine’s healthcare sector and Gaza’s already devastated health system, while also disrupting access to medical services in the occupied West Bank.
The U.S. lawmakers said the detainees are being held in dire conditions that put their health and safety at risk.
This comes as several world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly also expressed concern over the situation in Gaza and Israel’s offensive there, describing it as a “source of shame” and “genocide.”
