Sean Parnell, a senior adviser to the U.S. Secretary of War, has announced that classified documents were discovered during a review of the 2021 attack at Kabul airport that, according to him, should have been provided to the review panel earlier.
Parnell said on Wednesday, August 26, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the deadly attack at the “Abbey Gate” of Kabul airport, that after the documents were reviewed by the special panel, it became clear why someone had tried to conceal them.
Parnell did not specify who had hidden the documents or provide any details about their contents.
He added: “I will not give you a simple and convenient narrative of the truth, and we will not rush this process. We will follow the evidence wherever it leads and to anyone who is connected to it.”
A suicide attack by Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) at the “Abbey Gate” of Kabul airport on August 26, 2021, during the evacuation of foreign forces from Afghanistan, killed 13 U.S. service members and around 170 Afghan civilians.
Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Secretary of War, announced last year that Parnell, a former soldier in the Afghanistan war, would lead the special panel reviewing the case.
The panel is reviewing the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the “Abbey Gate” attack.
