The Afghanistan-U.S. Refugee Alliance (AfghanEvac) has announced that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will sign a nine-month extension for operations at Al-Sailiya Camp in Qatar.
The organization said on Wednesday, September 30, that extending the camp’s operations is “an achievement for Afghan allies.”
AfghanEvac thanked Marco Rubio and the Qatari government for the decision.
According to the organization, 1,039 citizens of Afghanistan are currently staying at the camp, 72 percent of whom are women and children.
AfghanEvac added that more than 150 of those remaining at the camp are family members of U.S. military personnel.
The organization said that all citizens of Afghanistan staying at Al-Sailiya Camp have undergone security screenings by the U.S. government.
This comes as four members of the U.S. Congress sent a letter on Tuesday, September 29, urging the U.S. secretaries of state and homeland security to transfer the asylum seekers stranded at Al-Sailiya Camp in Qatar to the United States by exempting them.
