The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says Afghanistan spends more than $280 million annually on electricity imports despite its vast potential for solar energy production.
The agency said on Tuesday, November 3, that Afghanistan imports more than 80 percent of its electricity needs from other countries.
According to UNDP, Afghanistan’s potential solar power generation capacity is estimated at more than 220 gigawatts.
However, large parts of the country’s population still lack access to stable and reliable electricity.
UNDP added that its projects have provided more than 5.5 million Afghans with access to clean energy since 2021.
The organization stressed that expanding access to sustainable energy requires cooperation among various institutions and partners.
