The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) says it has begun repairing 800 shelters for vulnerable families in Kunduz and Baghlan provinces with support from the United Nations Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (UN STFA).
UN-Habitat said on Thursday, October 8, in a post on X that thousands of returning families in Afghanistan are facing a shortage of adequate shelter.
The agency said that despite the launch of the program, the need for shelter remains widespread, and many returning families still need assistance to repair or rebuild their homes.
The development comes as the number of Afghans returning from neighboring countries has increased in recent years, putting greater pressure on facilities and services in areas receiving returnees.
According to figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), about 5.4 million Afghans returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan between October 2023 and the end of 2025.
