The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) says more than 100 families in Zinda Jan district of Herat province have gained access to drinking water through a solar-powered water supply system.
The agency said on X on Monday, November 2, that these families had previously faced difficulties accessing drinking water.
UN-Habitat added that the water supply network was established with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Access to safe drinking water remains one of the major challenges facing families in Afghanistan.
The development comes as the United Nations has previously warned of a worsening water crisis in the country.
According to a UN report, climate change, rising water demand, a lack of financial resources, excessive groundwater extraction and poor water resource management have exacerbated the crisis.
