Antonio Guterres, the United Nations secretary-general, says at least 34 journalists have been killed worldwide over the past year.
On Monday, November 2, marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Guterres called for measures to ensure journalists’ safety.
He added that journalists around the world pay a heavy price for telling the truth.
According to Guterres, journalists frequently face harassment, surveillance, legal complaints, physical attacks and imprisonment.
The UN secretary-general stressed that nothing should prevent journalists from carrying out their work, which he described as essential to human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
He added that this requires investigating all cases, prosecuting those responsible and ending online attacks against journalists.
