The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with support from Italy, is supporting the cultivation and processing of roses and saffron in Afghanistan as alternative options to the illegal cultivation of poppies.
The UN agency said on Monday, September 14, that the program is being implemented in poppy-affected areas of Nangarhar and Herat provinces, with the aim of providing alternative livelihood opportunities for farmers.
According to the agency, alongside promoting the cultivation and processing of roses and saffron, people will also be trained in wool spinning, silk weaving, and vegetable processing.
The UN office added that supporting these activities could help create alternative sources of income for families living in areas affected by poppy cultivation.
The program, supported by Italy, aims to strengthen livelihood opportunities and reduce farmers’ dependence on illegal poppy cultivation in Nangarhar and Herat.
