The agency notes that since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, women and girls have been stripped of fundamental rights, including access to education, employment, and personal freedoms.
The report, released on Friday, 27 June 2025, underscores Afghanistan’s “catastrophic” lag behind other nations in gender equality and women’s empowerment. UN Women states that over 80 decrees issued by the Taliban Supreme Leader have specifically targeted the basic rights of women in Afghanistan, exacerbating the challenges they face.
Despite these hardships, women and girls in Afghanistan continue to resist the Taliban’s stringent laws. UN Women has been actively supporting them over the years and is currently focusing on fostering the strength, leadership, and resilience of girls to help them navigate and challenge the oppressive environment.
