The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has warned that the ban on female teachers teaching in boys’ schools in Afghanistan has further exacerbated the teacher shortage.
The organization said in a press statement on Tuesday, August 11, that the decline in the number of female teachers in schools in Afghanistan is undermining the quality of education for all students.
UNESCO added that, alongside restrictions on education, it is implementing educational, literacy, skills development and psychosocial support programmes for girls and women in Afghanistan.
UNESCO said these programmes are not a substitute for formal education, but as long as the restrictions remain in place, they provide important opportunities for continued learning.
The organization added that UNESCO and its partners, including the European Union (EU) and Canada, are working to provide educational opportunities and safe environments in Afghanistan.
