Tajudeen Oyewale, the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has said that Afghanistan is experiencing one of the largest return crises in the world.
On Saturday, May 23, Oyewale wrote on his X account that UN teams are working to ensure that returning children and families have access to health, nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and protection services.
The UNICEF representative said that to address the current situation, the United Nations response plan in Afghanistan requires urgent and sustained support.
Previously, the United Nations had also announced the launch of a plan to respond to the large-scale return of Afghan citizens from Pakistan and Iran.
According to UN projections, more than two million people may be returned to Afghanistan between April and December 2026.
