The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that so far, 743 confirmed cases of Ebola virus infection among children and 330 child deaths caused by the disease have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
UNICEF warned on Thursday, August 6, on its official page that the Ebola outbreak, in addition to directly threatening children’s health, has significantly reduced visits by children and families to healthcare centres.
The agency said that fear of contracting the virus and disruptions in the delivery of health services have limited families’ access to medical care and could have serious consequences for children’s health.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has faced repeated Ebola virus outbreaks in recent years.
This infectious disease, which spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, can lead to death in severe cases.
