The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that recent floods in Afghanistan have left dozens dead and injured, while destroying hundreds of homes and parts of vital infrastructure.
The organization reported on Sunday, August 23, that the floods occurred in central and eastern Afghanistan between July 20 and August 3, affecting the lives of many people.
UNICEF said that Parun district in Nuristan province was among the areas hardest hit, where 24 people were killed and 125 others injured, while several people are also missing.
According to the report, 120 homes in Parun were destroyed or damaged. A private health center, local markets, bridges, roads, and water supply networks were also damaged in the floods.
In central Afghanistan, the floods left two people dead and six others injured across nine provinces. In these areas, 316 homes were damaged, and around 2,057 people were affected.
UNICEF also warned that the floods may have displaced or exposed ammunition and explosive materials that had previously been buried underground.
