Two US officials have said that the US military escorted 40 commercial vessels carrying 18 million barrels of oil as they passed through the Strait of Hormuz.

CNN reported on Thursday, September 3, that the operation took place amid a new round of attacks between Iran and the United States on Tuesday.

According to the report, the military escort was the largest recorded during wartime conditions.

The increased US military protection of commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz comes as the United States steps up security measures to maintain maritime traffic through the region.
