The US State Department has offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the recovery and return of Mahmoud Shah Habibi, an Afghan-American national.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in a statement on Monday, August 10, that it remains committed to bringing Habibi back to his family.
Michael Bergwald, an FBI counterterrorism official, said: “The FBI remains committed to bringing Mahmoud back to his family, including his daughter, who has not seen her father since before she was one year old.”
Habibi worked as an adviser at Asia Consultancy Group, a Kabul-based telecommunications company. He previously served as head of Afghanistan’s Civil Aviation Authority.
According to the FBI statement, on August 10, 2022, Taliban intelligence officials pulled Habibi and his driver from their vehicle and detained them along with 29 other employees of Asia Consultancy Group.
The Taliban have so far provided no information about his condition or whereabouts.
