US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the United States will continue to implement its defense cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia amid ongoing hostilities involving Yemen’s Houthis.
Al Jazeera reported on Saturday night, October 31, that Rubio made the remarks at a news conference on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
According to the report, Rubio said US officials had been in regular and ongoing contact with their Saudi counterparts.
“We have defense agreements with Saudi Arabia. We have honored those commitments and will continue to do so, particularly those that are defensive in nature,” Rubio said.
The US secretary of state also welcomed other countries’ participation in defending Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks, adding that Washington would fulfill its commitments.
US officials have so far refrained from directly participating in the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, limiting their involvement to intelligence cooperation.
