Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, spokesperson for Pakistan’s army, said on Thursday that the military was “cautiously optimistic” about mediation efforts between the United States and Iran.
Reuters reported on Friday night, October 30, that Chaudhry made the remarks in his first public comments since Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief, visited Tehran last week.
According to the report, the army spokesperson said: “If there was not going to be a positive outcome, why would the army chief have to travel there twice? So, yes, absolutely.”
He added that there were still “spoilers and powerful adversaries” who believed that continued conflict served their interests.
Chaudhry declined to provide details of the talks or say whether the United States had supported the visit.
However, Pakistan’s mediation efforts to end the war between the United States and Iran have failed to produce tangible results in recent months.
