There are individuals residing in Western countries who, utilizing the freedom of expression available in the West and leveraging the opportunities provided by digital technology and social networks, express support for the Taliban and attempt to justify their actions. However, this approach leads to the gradual normalization of a group with a long history of terrorism and oppressive practices within their own country. Presenting a terrorist group that disregards the human rights of its citizens as normal not only infringes upon the rights of individuals to determine their own destiny but also hinders women from accessing education and participating in employment. The normalization of such activities by these sympathizers essentially amounts to complicity in the oppression of the people and support for the violation of their rights.
In addition to the factors mentioned above, the Taliban maintains direct and organic connections with numerous well-known terrorist organizations worldwide. It serves as both an ideological and operational platform, despite appearing to be in conflict and engaged in power struggles with groups like ISIS. Any form of support for the Taliban indirectly contributes to international terrorism, posing significant dangers for both Afghanistan and other countries.
The Taliban’s role in the region is also a catalyst for crisis, causing concern among all neighboring countries. Afghanistan remains trapped in a state of uncertainty, with an uncertain future looming over it like a black hole. With no recognized and accepted government in place, all interactions with Afghanistan are compelled by necessity, aiming to prevent the situation from deteriorating further for the Afghan people and to contain the spread of this turmoil to other nations.
Support for the Taliban on social media, especially from individuals who are dissatisfied with living under Taliban control, is a glaring hypocrisy. If someone believes that this group deserves support, they should first choose to experience life under its rule themselves. If they are unwilling to subject themselves and their own families to Taliban governance but still advocate for millions of citizens in the country, they are caught in a hypocritical contradiction, and their morally reprehensible actions must be exposed. Silence in the face of such unethical conduct will only perpetuate and exacerbate this phenomenon, leading society deeper into misery.
In addition to the ethical dimension, there are other consequences of this issue for both domestic and international populations. The normalization of the Taliban sets a dangerous precedent for legitimizing other terrorist groups, such as Al-Qaeda, ISIS, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, and others. These groups are deeply rooted in ideology and act as strategic breeding grounds. Attempts to normalize terrorist organizations create an environment that facilitates the recruitment of new members and entices vulnerable individuals, thereby posing a threat to the security of host countries. Moreover, it worsens the challenges faced by Afghan immigrants, especially families associated with these extremist groups.
Defending the rights of the Afghan people, democracy, freedom of expression, the rule of law, and civil society requires resilience and resistance against the supporters and advocates of the Taliban abroad. This moral responsibility rests on all Afghan immigrant communities and, in fact, represents the most effective course of action under the current circumstances. By standing against the Taliban sympathizers, Afghan communities can play a crucial role in safeguarding their own future and promoting peace and stability.
