The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has called for greater support for teachers and improvements in their professional status on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day.

UNESCO said on Monday, October 5, that teachers around the world face challenges including digital technologies, climate change, migration and displacement.

The organization said teachers need greater support, better working conditions and appropriate professional recognition to perform their roles more effectively.

World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on October 5. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

The day is observed in cooperation with the ILO, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Education International.
