The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that, following recent flooding in Afghanistan, “hundreds of people have been killed and injured,” and around 73,300 people have been affected.
OCHA said in a report on Wednesday, April 29, that recent devastating floods have significantly increased the need for humanitarian assistance.
The organization has also reported the destruction of 7,500 homes, adding that between April 16 and May 26, large areas of agricultural land were destroyed, putting the livelihoods of thousands of rural families at risk.
According to the report, the devastating floods have worsened humanitarian needs and increased the risk of food insecurity and waterborne diseases.
The agency has so far confirmed the urgent need for immediate humanitarian assistance for around 57,000 people and said that assessments are still ongoing in 34 districts.
Seasonal floods in Afghanistan occur every year, destroying farmland and homes and also taking the lives of dozens of people.
