Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, has warned that Afghanistan is not safe and has called for the protection of the people of Afghanistan against forced returns.
Bennett wrote on Saturday, May 23, on the social media platform X that he supports the message from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) calling for a halt to the deportation of people from Afghanistan.
He urged countries to protect citizens of Afghanistan from forced returns.
Bennett stressed that countries must read this message, take it seriously, and act in accordance with international law.
The United Nations Special Rapporteur stated that the forced return of individuals to Afghanistan must stop, as “Afghanistan is not safe.”
Meanwhile, OHCHR announced that women, children, and men from Afghanistan are continuing to be expelled from countries where they had sought safety.
The office also warned that several countries are forcing people of Afghanistan to return to Afghanistan against their will, placing them at serious risk.
