Sun Lei, Chargé d’Affaires of China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, has said that terrorist groups based in Afghanistan continue to pose a serious threat to the country and its neighbors.
Lei said on Thursday, August 6, at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council that groups such as ISIS-Khorasan continue to strengthen their capabilities and readiness to carry out attacks beyond the borders.
He called on Taliban authorities to remain committed to their counterterrorism obligations and take decisive action against all terrorist groups based in Afghanistan.
China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations also stressed that efforts must be made to prevent Afghanistan from once again becoming a haven for terrorist groups.
The Chargé d’Affaires of China’s Permanent Mission also called on Central Asian countries and regional organizations, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), to strengthen their cooperation with Afghanistan in addressing cross-border security challenges.
