The Coordination Council of Afghanistan’s Political and Consular Missions has strongly condemned the detention of women and girls by the Taliban and the violent suppression of peaceful protesters in Herat province.
In a statement released on Tuesday, June 9, the council said that several people were killed and injured during recent protests in Herat against the detention of women.
The council called for the immediate release of all detained women and girls, an end to discrimination and violence against women, and accountability for those responsible for suppressing the demonstrations.
It also urged the United Nations, the European Union, and the international community to place the rights of Afghan women and girls at the center of their engagement and decision-making regarding Afghanistan.
The statement comes amid recent reports that dozens of women were detained in Herat and that protesters were met with a violent response from the Taliban.
