A devastating earthquake in the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar has left health centers struggling with a critical shortage of female doctors, according to local sources. On Monday, September 1, 2025, the Hasht-e Subh Daily reported that injured women have been transferred to health facilities, but the absence of female doctors is putting their health at serious risk. Many of these women have been taken to the health center in the Kunar Khas district of Nangarhar, which is facing significant challenges due to the lack of female medical staff.
Residents have urgently appealed to the Taliban to allow female doctors to travel to the affected areas to provide life-saving care. Sources emphasized that the majority of the earthquake’s victims are women and children, highlighting the pressing need for gender-specific medical support. The Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health had previously acknowledged that several eastern provinces, including Kunar and Nangarhar, are grappling with a shortage of female doctors, a situation now exacerbated by the disaster.
According to statistics released by Taliban authorities, the earthquake that struck Kunar last night has claimed over 600 lives so far. The scale of the tragedy underscores the urgent need for adequate medical resources, particularly for vulnerable groups like women and children, as the affected regions work to respond to the crisis.
