The Democratic Party’s victory in the US midterm elections, and its winning of a majority in both chambers of Congress, is undoubtedly one of the most important political developments in Washington. This victory should not be seen merely as a transfer of power between America’s two political parties. It can also be read as a sign of dissatisfaction among a significant part of American society with the policies of Donald Trump, particularly on the economy, foreign policy, and the management of international crises.
The most important message of this election for the White House is that even a president with great political power and wide influence cannot ignore the costs of his policies without regard for public opinion.
1) The Iran-US War: Trump’s Most Important Political Test
One of the key factors behind the Republicans’ defeat has been the American public’s dissatisfaction with the war with Iran and its economic and security consequences. The war has not only imposed high costs on the US economy, but has also heightened concerns about the widening of the conflict and greater instability in the Middle East.
Now that the Democrats have taken a majority in Congress, Trump will face more political constraints. The Democrats can place war-related military budgets under closer scrutiny, investigate the administration’s military decisions, and apply political and legal pressure to limit the president’s war powers.
Of course, it should not be forgotten that the US president remains the commander in chief of the armed forces, and a change in the congressional majority does not mean an immediate halt to the war. Even so, continuing the war without political accountability and serious congressional oversight will be harder for Trump from now on.
2) Implications of This Development for Iran and the Future of the Middle East
The Democrats’ victory could change the political and diplomatic calculations of both Iran and the United States. Tehran may see this development as a sign of eroding domestic support for Trump’s war policy and may try to use the political rift in Washington to strengthen its position in negotiations.
Conversely, the Trump administration may also seek a way out of the war or a political agreement to prevent domestic and electoral pressures from intensifying.
Nevertheless, one should not expect the Democrats to necessarily adopt an entirely different and friendly policy toward Iran. The disagreement between Republicans and Democrats may lie more in how the crisis is managed, the extent to which military force is used, and the diplomatic means of resolving the conflict, rather than necessarily in all of America’s strategic objectives toward Iran.
Therefore, while there is a possibility of increased pressure for negotiations and a narrowing of the conflict, this development is no guarantee of a quick end to the war.
3) Israel and the Security Equations of the Middle East
Another possible consequence of this election could be increased political pressure on the Israeli government and its regional policies. A section of the Democratic movement in America is seriously critical of the continuation of the wars and their humanitarian and security consequences in the region.
However, the Democrats’ victory should not be interpreted as an end to American support for Israel. Support for Israel’s security still holds a place within a significant part of the American political establishment.
Still, more debate and pressure may emerge in Congress over the nature of military support, the conditions for the use of American weapons, ceasefires, humanitarian aid, and the need for a political solution to the Palestinian crisis.
4) Afghanistan and the Countries of the Region: Potential Victims of a Prolonged Crisis
From the perspective of Afghanistan and its neighboring countries, the main concern is the expansion of the Iran-US war and the transformation of the Middle East into the arena of a long-term confrontation.
Any escalation of the war could threaten regional security, disrupt trade and transit, raise energy and raw material prices, and place greater economic pressure on the region’s vulnerable countries.
Afghanistan, given its economic dependencies, trade relations, and geographic position, cannot remain immune to the consequences of such a crisis.
For this reason, it is in the interest of Afghanistan and the countries of the region that this war end as soon as possible through diplomacy, negotiation, and political understanding.
5) Will Trump Be Weakened in the Last Two Years of His Presidency?
The answer is yes, but this weakening does not mean the end of Trump’s political power.
A Democratic majority in both chambers of Congress can make it harder to pass budgets, confirm senior officials, oversee the government’s performance, and advance the president’s political agenda.
There is also the possibility of extensive investigations into the administration’s decisions, particularly regarding the Iran war, military spending, and foreign policy.
Even so, Trump still retains executive powers, military command, and the veto. Washington may therefore enter a period of intense political confrontation between the White House and Congress.
Conclusion
Overall, the Democrats’ victory can be seen as a clear message to Donald Trump and American policymakers: military and political power, without the backing of public opinion and without regard for economic and human costs, cannot form the basis of a successful policy for long.
The Iran-US war has shown that regional crises cannot be resolved by military power alone, and that any miscalculation can have consequences far beyond the borders of the two countries.
It is hoped that this political development in America will create the ground for reducing tensions, strengthening diplomacy, preventing the spread of the war, and restoring stability to the Middle East.
Today’s world, more than ever, needs political rationality, dialogue, and respect for the interests of nations, not new wars and endless military rivalries.
The Democrats’ victory will acquire real and historic significance only if this opportunity is used to contain the war, prevent the killing of people, and establish lasting peace in the region.
