The European Union has allocated €15 million in assistance to support food security and address the impacts of climate change in Afghanistan.
The European Union reported on Monday, August 31, that the assistance will be provided as part of cooperation with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to “strengthen climate resilience and food systems” in Afghanistan.
The European Union added that the assistance will support school feeding using locally produced food, the creation of climate-resilient livelihood opportunities, and the sustainable management of natural resources.
The bloc also said that part of the assistance will be allocated to strengthening private-sector participation in agriculture and the food industry.
According to the European Union, the programme aims to improve nutrition, protect livelihoods, and strengthen the economic capacity of vulnerable rural areas in Afghanistan.
The European Union added that, alongside meeting immediate food needs, this approach will help local communities become more resilient to natural disasters and the long-term impacts of climate change.
