The government of Guinea has announced that at least 30 people were killed and another 22 were injured after layers of waste collapsed at a landfill in Conakry, the country’s capital.
Reuters reported on Monday, August 24, that heavy rainfall caused a large volume of waste to collapse, burying nearby residential homes under the debris.
It was reported that among the victims was a woman who lost her five children in the incident.
Conakry, Guinea’s capital and largest city, faces the risk of flooding and landslides during the rainy season. The accumulation of waste in some areas also increases the risk of such incidents.
