Besmillah Taban, former head of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ministry of Interior under the previous government, questioned the international community’s double-standard approach toward the Taliban at the Geneva conference.
Speaking on Monday, May 11, 2026, at a meeting titled “Accountability, Truth and Reconciliation: Foundations for the Return of Constitutional Governance in Afghanistan” in Geneva, Mr. Taban said it is difficult to trust the international community’s efforts to hold the Taliban accountable while many of these countries are simultaneously engaging with them.
He told representatives of the international community at the meeting that many countries are currently hosting Taliban-related conferences.
He stressed that some countries have chosen to engage with the Taliban while overlooking human rights violations in Afghanistan.
The meeting also examined the creation of an independent accountability mechanism for Afghanistan, transitional justice, and discussions regarding the formation of an inclusive government.
