Human Rights Watch has said that five years after the Taliban takeover, human rights restrictions in Afghanistan have expanded, while fundamental freedoms continue to face serious limitations.
The organization said in a report published on Friday, September 18, that the Taliban have expanded their governing structure through a series of decrees, directives and laws.
According to the report, journalists, human rights defenders, protesters and former government officials, including former security forces, continue to face arbitrary detention, prolonged imprisonment, torture and other forms of mistreatment.
Human Rights Watch said the implementation of corporal punishments, including flogging and executions, continues, and in some cases, these punishments are carried out following proceedings that fall short of fair-trial standards.
The organization added that ethnic and religious groups, including Hazaras and Ismaili Shia Muslims, also continue to face discrimination and targeted violence.
