Mexican authorities have said that Hurricane Polo destroyed homes, felled trees, and flooded roads as it passed along the country’s Pacific coast.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported early Wednesday, September 30, that the storm made landfall late Monday in the south of the Baja California Peninsula, bringing winds of up to 175 kilometres per hour.
According to the report, Mexico’s National Hurricane Center warned of flooding and mudslides, saying up to 20 centimetres of rainfall is expected in the state of Sonora.
Hurricane Polo is the latest storm in an active Pacific hurricane season, which has been strengthened by the El Niño weather phenomenon that has caused unprecedented warming in the tropical Pacific Ocean.
