Iran’s Human Rights Organization has confirmed the execution of two individuals, among them an Afghan citizen, at Shiraz Central Prison in Iran.
According to a statement released by the Iranian Human Rights Organization on Tuesday, March 5, the executions took place yesterday morning.
The statement reads: “Two prisoners, including an Afghan national, convicted on charges related to drug trafficking or intentional murder, were executed at Shiraz Central Prison.”
The Afghan citizen, identified as Iman, was sentenced to death for “intentional murder.”
The other individual, Mustafa Jamil Samadi, aged 40, was convicted of drug trafficking.
A third individual, initially slated for execution, has had their sentence delayed following a period of solitary confinement, as per the organization’s report.
The organization noted a concerning trend of increasing executions of prisoners convicted on drug-related charges over the past four years.
Despite these confirmations, Iranian state media has yet to report on the executions of these two individuals.
The Taliban, as of now, have not issued any statements regarding this matter.
In February of the previous year, a prisoner at Birjand Central Prison, speaking to 8 Sobh newspaper, attributed the surge in executions of Afghan nationals in Iranian prisons to the actions of the Taliban.
He asserted that the failure of the Taliban to uphold agreements has resulted in the execution of Afghan citizens within Iranian prison facilities.
