Iranian officials say the seizure of “industrial” drugs along the borders of Razavi Khorasan Province with Afghanistan increased fourfold in the first six months of the current year compared with the same period last year.

The Iranian Students News Agency (IRNA) reported on Monday, October 12, that the commander of the Razavi Khorasan Border Guard Command said 1.5 tonnes of various narcotics, including opium, heroin and industrial drugs, had been seized along these borders during this period.

Majid Shoja, commander of the Razavi Khorasan Border Guard Command, said the seizure of “industrial” drugs, particularly crystal methamphetamine, along Iran’s borders with Afghanistan had increased during this period.

According to him, approximately 30 percent of the seized narcotics were “industrial” drugs, while most of the seizures consisted of opium and its derivatives, including heroin and morphine.

Shoja cited rising prices of industrial drugs and the expansion of their production in Afghanistan as reasons for the increase in crystal methamphetamine seizures along the borders of Razavi Khorasan Province.
