Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that Russia suffered a record 54,400 military casualties, including those killed and wounded, in the war in Ukraine in October.
Anadolu Agency reported Sunday night, November 1, that Zelensky made the claim on social media.
According to the report, Zelensky also claimed that Ukraine had recaptured 96.2 square kilometres of its territory from Russia last month.
He said Russia had lost this number of troops through deaths or severe injuries, describing it as the highest monthly casualty figure since the start of the war.
Zelensky also stated that Russian forces suffered 2,250 casualties on October 21, which he described as a “record” for daily losses.
“Russia is suffering losses. We have held our positions, are liberating our territories, and are ensuring that every day of the war is as costly as possible for the aggressor,” the Ukrainian president said.
Russia has not yet responded to Zelensky’s statements. Independent verification of these claims remains difficult as the war continues.
