The United States Department of State says Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the April 16 ceasefire for 45 days following two days of US-hosted negotiations.
Tommy Pigott wrote in a post on X on Saturday, May 16, that negotiations between Lebanon and Israel will resume on June 2 and 3 under US mediation.
He added that a separate security track involving Lebanese and Israeli military delegations will begin on May 29 at the Pentagon.
The State Department spokesperson said Washington hopes the talks will help advance lasting peace between Lebanon and Israel, ensure full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establish real security along their shared border.
Delegations from Lebanon and Israel met in Washington on May 14 and 15 to discuss the terms of extending the ceasefire.
The Lebanese delegation was led by Simon Karam, while the Israeli delegation was headed by Joseph Yossi.
The first round of negotiations on April 14 resulted in a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon that took effect on April 17. Following a second round of talks on April 23, the ceasefire was extended for an additional three weeks.
