The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) says Afghanistan is facing deep humanitarian, economic and climate crises, while NATO member states have forgotten their promises to support the people of the country.

Jan Egeland, secretary-general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, said in a report on Monday, August 10, that NATO member states have forgotten their promises to Afghan girls and boys and have turned their backs on Afghanistan’s civilians.

“We are increasingly left alone in the face of growing needs and the declining rights of girls and women across Afghanistan,” he said.

According to the report, more than six million Afghan migrants have returned to Afghanistan from neighboring countries since late 2023.

The organization said 73 percent of those who have returned are unemployed and have limited opportunities to earn a living.

Climate crises, regional tensions and growing restrictions on women and girls have also increased pressure on the people of Afghanistan.
