Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, has said that the bloc’s naval mission in the Red Sea needs more than 10 warships.
Reuters reported early Wednesday, September 22, that Kallas made the remarks to reporters on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to the report, the EU foreign policy chief said that such a number of warships is not currently present in the region.
She added, “When the EU military operation known as Aspides began, estimates indicated that at least 10 ships were needed. In my view, the situation is even more serious now.”
Last week, Kallas also sent a letter to EU member states urging them to deploy more naval and air resources to the region.
The Red Sea has become one of the world’s most insecure shipping routes amid tensions and fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthis.
