Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, stressed the importance of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Kallas wrote on X Tuesday night, September 22, that she had discussed diplomatic avenues with the Iranian foreign minister for ending the war between the United States and Iran.
The EU foreign policy chief said there were no charges for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz before the war and that there should be none after the war either.
She also said she raised the issue of domestic repression in Iran, including a significant increase in executions, during the meeting.
This comes as the Strait of Hormuz has remained closed since the start of the Iran-U.S. war, while Iran has insisted on imposing transit fees on ships.
